Most New Balance shoes are leather-free. Actually, a lot of running shoes are leather free, mostly because synthetics are lighter weight than leather. If you go to any website that sells a lot of athletic shoes (e.g. http://www.roadrunnersports.com/), in the shoe's specifications it should tell you what the materials are. So look for a shoe that has a mesh/synthetic leather upper, and you should be fine. Or if you're not looking to spend a lot of money, Payless is always a great place to look.
References :
Not a vegan, but I've always liked canvas shoes. In fact, when I was growing up, my mother did not use the terms "sneakers" or "tennis shoes", but "canvas shoes". She used to buy us a cheap K-mart version of Keds.

Take a look on the Keds website: http://www.keds.com/

Especially look at the women's sneakers. They've been making shoes out of rubber and canvas for a long time. Some of their shoes do have some leather, but I'll bet if you look carefully, you'll find some good-quality non-leather sneakers.
References :
That's a really nice gift idea! There are a couple vegan shoe makers if you're wanting something kind of upscale. I find my man-made material shoes at Wal-Mart though! They've held out for a few years now!

Check out the site below, I think they'll be pretty handy.
References :
http://zeta.zappos.com/search?department=&term=vegan
