Most of the time it's really easy to buy cruelty-free shoes. You can walk into almost any shoe store (except, say, a Boot Town) and find shoes with all man-made/synthetic/plant products. They have to list what the shoes are made out of either on the shoe box or on the shoe--usually on the sole or the inside of the shoe.

Some shoes that look like they're leather aren't--I have a pair of fake leather shoes, and nobody can tell!
References :
This may not be you style but I really like Eco Sneaks by Simple. They are a little pricey but I think they are worth it and they last forever!
References :
Check out online shops that cater to Vegans, and see what they have. You can also shop Vegetarian categories at both endless.com and zappos. If you have to get them in town, you can find what you like on the web and call around to your favorite shops and see if they have them or can order them for you. Also, some shoes by pleaser, tuk, converse, vans, macbeth, and other brands have vegan styles.
Just check the shoe for the "man made" stamp- anywhere you go, even payless.
References :
http://www.veganessentials.com/

they're not leather, but Vans makes a old-school skate shoe that is vegan and cruelty-free. They are black with one black stripe down the side. I wore them for 3 years. Check out their site, they might still be up
